Our Church

A Tapestry of Faith and History

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has a rich history that dates back to the arrival of St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, in India in A.D. 52. The Church’s journey through the centuries is marked by close relationships with various Christian traditions, resulting in significant milestones.

At least from the fourth century, the Indian Church entered into a close relationship with the Persian or East Syrian Church, inheriting language and liturgies. Later, interactions with Roman Catholic and Western Protestant missionaries led to divisions within the indigenous community. In the seventeenth century, the Church established a connection with the Antiochene Church, incorporating West Syrian liturgies and practices.

The establishment of the Catholicate in 1912 marked a new phase in the Church’s history. Presently, the Church follows the West Syrian liturgy and adheres to the faith established by the three Ecumenical Councils of Nicea (A.D. 325), Constantinople (A.D. 381), and Ephesus (A.D. 431).
