Our Diocese

Idukki Diocese Chronicles

Embracing Spirituality in the Heart of Nature

Idukki Diocese is a vibrant part of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, steeped in history and tradition. Established in 1982, this diocese was formed from the Kottayam Diocese, widening the scope for the manifestation of Christ’s love through meticulous pastoral ministry.

The visionary leadership of our first Metropolitan, H.G. Mathews Mar Barnabas of blessed memory, laid the foundation for the Idukki Diocese. His unwavering commitment led to the acquisition of the sacred land at Chakkupallam, where the splendid bishop’s house, known as Gathseemon Aramana, now stands as a testament to our faith.

Spanning across vast hilly and forested terrain, the parishes within Idukki Diocese are spread out, reflecting the diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes of this region. Despite the distances that separate us, our faith unites us in forming a tight-knit Christian community.

Gathsemon Aramana

The Heart of Our Diocese

H.G. Mathews Mar Barnabas bought the land at Chakkupallam and constructed the bishop’s house named Gathesemon Aramana. In 2006, H.G. Augen Mar Dionysius further expanded the structure, adding the first floor, and established the Aramana chapel in honour of Abdul Jaleel Mar Gregorios. Recently renovated in April 2023, it stands as a symbol of God’s mercy over the spiritual and administrative growth of the Idukki Diocese.
